Shark Awareness Week

Shark Awareness Week

The New Zealand Shark Alliance (NZSA) are planning a series of exciting events rolled out over what they've dubbed:
'Shark Awareness Week' - September 9-15th.

The NZSA is a coalition of major Non Governmental Ogranisations  (WWF, Forest&Bird, Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd, etc.) united together in a common goal... to achieve a ban on shark finning in New Zealand waters.

Few people realize this extremely wasteful and unsustainable practice of killing a shark only for its fins, and dumping the rest of the body overboard is still legal in New Zealand, despite being banned in over 1/3 of the world.

The alliance members' main goal is to help spread awareness of this issue and provide the public with an opportunity to voice their opinion.  After months of steady lobbying, public campaigning, involvement in the review of the National Plan Of Action for sharks (NPOA-sharks), they believe the government is on the cusp of making a decision about whether shark finning will continue in NZ waters.  If you'd like more information on the NZSA click here

This week the NZSA have organised two special events in Wellington including: "The underwater world of sharks!" at Te Papa's Soundings Theatre, 12 September from 5:30 - 9 pm and "Shark Meet and Greet" at our Island Bay Bait House Aquarium on Sunday 15th September from 10 am to 3 pm.
