Giant Stingray Nibbles Diver's Head

Amazing footage has emerged of a freediver's close call with a whopping 150 kilogram stingray that "gently nibbled" at his head near Rottnest Island.

West Australian commercial divers producing a documentary on sharks, shipwrecks and marine life were filming off Rottnest when crew member Johnny Debnam had the gigantic stingray skim over his head.

Despite feeling "a bit of a nibble" after the ray repeated the movement three times, Mr Debnam was unharmed and described the sensation as a "rush".

"That's what makes you feel alive – natural, awesome, pure things like that – you can't buy that," he said.

"I'll be stoked to swim with him again. Any time old stinger's up for a swim I'm there, mate."

Mr Debnam said he thought the fact he was freediving and not trussed up in scuba gear was why the stingray approached.

"I was sitting on the bottom ... I was totally calm and at his level, you know, and I think that made him happy to approach me," he said.
